Planning a special getaway before or after a milestone event in your life creates an opportunity to make memories that will last a lifetime. Hence the “minimoon” or “honeymoon” is taken after a wedding or elopement. But, of all the “moons” you may take in your lifetime, perhaps the most exciting will be your “babymoon.” Everyone dreams of an exotic destination in which to celebrate by saying “I do.” But when it comes to where and how to mark the arrival of a newborn, you may need some help in planning your babymoon experience. What is a Babymoon

If you’re unfamiliar with the concept, let us explain. A babymoon happens right before your newborn makes its way into the world. Whether it’s your first child or one of many that make up your family, taking time to enjoy the anticipation of a new arrival with a getaway for just you two makes the event extra special. Parents-to-be spend time reinforcing their own bond in preparation for meeting their newborn and getting ready to be first-time parents or parents redux.

When to Take a Babymoon

Experts agree that up to 36 weeks along it is safe to travel domestically. The sweet spot for a pre-baby getaway is after the first trimester when hopefully nausea has ebbed and you have a bit more energy. The second trimester, 14 to 28 weeks along, seems to be when most couples plan their babymoon. There is no hard and fast rule, however. Take into consideration the season, distance and mode of travel, and your planned activities to determine the best time for you and your partner to get away. Of course, if you’re having a difficult pregnancy, it’s wise to consult with your doctor before traveling. And, for peace of mind, be sure to bring along your prenatal documents.

Where to Take a Babymoon

Choose a destination that appeals to both of you. Research activities and events that you can enjoy together. Perhaps you want to return to a destination that holds significance for you, that special place where you first met, or where you got engaged. Some couples choose a new destination where they can create special memories surrounding the days or weeks just before the new baby arrives.
