Why You Need to Travel Down the Cape Cod Rail Trail
With easy access to the outdoors from our stunning bed and breakfast, there are many wonderful ways to experience our area. Read over our local insights and discover everything you’ll need to know about the Cape Cod Rail Trail!
The History Behind This Paved Path
From 1848 to 1873, the Old Colony Railroad Company constructed this network to connect “the Cape” with other Massachusetts destinations like Boston! Before this, our scenic area was only accessible by stagecoach or foot. As our picturesque area became as a summer vacation hotspot, this comfortable train system shuttled in many visitors to see our natural beauty. Now, this scenic trail not only showcases our natural beauty but also features relics from the Cape Rail days!
How to Spend Your Time on This Iconic Stretch
Suitable for all ages to enjoy, plan to spend your day navigating this 22-mile area icon for some of the best views of Cape Cod. Whether you want to hike, bike, walk, or run down the Cape Cod Rail Trail, you’ll be captivated by the wonderful features that you’ll see on your journey. These delightful landmarks include Nickerson State Park, Cape Cod National Seashore, and the Harwich Historical Society Museum! Whichever way you decide to experience beloved byway, you’re sure to have an amazing time!
The Extension
In 2015, the Cape Cod Rail Trail extension includes two new bridges. One over Route 134 and one over Station Avenue, these structures expanded the paved path more than 3.7 miles and serve as a gateway to see, even more, beauty on “the Cape.” In the future, Cape officials plan to expand this former railroad and Shining Sea Bikeway to link all of the towns of Cape Cod together!
